Matt Lucas Will Be a Totally Different Type of Companion in This Year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special
Matt Lucas made his Doctor Who debut in last year's Christmas special as the human, Nardole (though his head was later cut-off and attached to a monstrous robot). However, Lucas quickly expressed his desire to return to the show, and apparently, showrunner Stephen Moffat was keen to grant his wish, as Nardole won't only be appearing in this year's Christmas Special, but also as a reoccurring character throughout DW's 10th series as well.

Nardole definitely brought a bit of levity to last year's special, and it looks like he'll do the same again in 2016. According to Doctor Who: The Fan Show, whose host, Christen Dee, was granted the privilege to attend a first read through of the script for this year's special, Nardole will be a totally different type of companion than what fans are primarily used to.

Nardole is described as a sort of "anti-companion" who shows reluctance to playing along with the Doctor's crazy schemes, instead of just rolling with them as Rose or Martha might have been apt to do in the past. His interplay with Capaldi's Doctor will, according to the video, bring a bit of comedy to this year's Christmas Special (not that comedy hasn't been a huge part of most of Doctor Who's past Christmas Specials - remember when Eleven decided to make a chimney entrance?).

Whovians have been waiting quite some time to see the Doctor on the small screen once again, as the Christmas Special will mark exactly one year since the last episode of Doctor Who aired. Capaldi has confirmed that the new full-time companion, Bill, won't be showing up for the Christmas Special, but will rather make her debut in the first episode of the 10th series when it premieres in April. Until then, Lucas' Nardole will apparently be serving as companion in the interim.

The upcoming Christmas Special of Doctor Who will, of course, premiere on December 25th.
