Adam Driver Wants Us to Relax About His Empire Strikes Back Comments

Adam Driver caused a media storm recently when he seemingly compared the Episode VIII script to Empire Strikes Back. But if the actor's recent clarification is to be believed, he wasn't really comparing the two movies at all, but simply using ESB as the prototypical successful sequel.

Last month, Driver said that Episode VIII is "similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone," which led to many outlets claiming that the films might be similar. But now, Driver is insisting that he only meant Episode VIII would have a different tone from The Force Awakens, not that it was similar in tone to Empire Strikes Back:

Opening quote
"What I said was the tone of it was different, I didn't say that it was gonna be in the vein of [it]," he told Vanity Fair. "I was using it as an example, so poor example. Next time I should say-I'm trying to think of another sequel to a movie that's good. When I read the script, it was not what I expected, in the best of ways."
Closing quote

To be fair, he is still comparing Episode VIII to Empire Strikes Back, but only in general quality (since most good sequels have a different tone from the original) rather than an actual similarity in tone. So anyone claiming that he said the two movies are similar would be exaggerating, but this still sounds very promising.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
