We Just Got Our First Look at the Queen of Atlantis from the Justice League Movie
Aquaman has been a running joke outside the comic book world for the past few years, mostly because he's not much help on land or in space, where most of the villainy happens in the DC Universe. But the new Justice League movie may change that—in the upcoming film, Aquaman is not a guy in an orange jumpsuit, but rather a deadly, burly viking-King of Atlantis. And he's not alone this time—joining him is Mera, Queen of Atlantis. Today, we got our first look at Amber Heard, who is playing Mera, and her amazing new costume (thanks to IGN).

It's not clear whether Mera will have a major role in Justice League, but she's expected to have one in the standalone Aquaman movie coming in 2018. Like all the new superhero movie franchises, we'll probably get a taste of her character (and her powers!) in a smaller role first, so the studios can see what people think of the character. Based on the costume alone, though, Mera looks cool as hell.

It's always tough to break tradition with the comics and come up with something original (as we've shown before with Cyborg and the Flash's rejected costume designs), but Mera's outfit evokes both the sea-green color of the ocean and the ancient, exotic splendor of Atlantis while still looking like a superhero costume. Here's the original sketch:

With Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel on the way, it's cool to see more new female superheroes like Mera showing up in the comic book movie universe. The Justice League movie promises to be a bit more light-hearted (just a bit) than Batman vs Superman, but judging from the photos of Mera, Zack Snyder's darker, grittier, and grayer DCU is still going strong.

Justice League is set to premiere November 17th, 2017. The Aquaman movie is set to release July 27th, 2018.
