Wolverine 3 Is Looking More and More Like Old Man Logan in New Photos
Yesterday we got a look at two new storyboards from the upcoming Wolverine movie Logan, showing him crashing through a car windshield, claws-first. The day before that we reported that the movie may have found its X-23 (and potentially revealed whose tiny hand Wolverine is holding in the movie poster). But something comic book fans have been wondering for a while is whether the movie is going to be a reimagining of the Old Man Logan storyline from the comics. Today, we got more evidence that it will.

For those who aren't familiar with the story, boy, is it dark. The arc is essentially a post-apocalyptic Western where Logan takes a roadtrip through a devastated American wasteland with a blind Hawkeye to deliver a package that will get Logan enough money to pay off his debts. There's a lot of callbacks to old-school Westerns, from the cowboy hat to the anarchic Wild-West atmosphere of bandits and brutality. We've already seen some black-and-white photos from the new movie that fall in line with the bleak aesthetic of Old Man Logan, including a heartbreaking picture of an old, weathered Professor X. Now, two recent photos suggest that the movie may indeed be hewing close to the comic book story:

Mutants

Both of these photos come from the wponx Instagram account, which is associated with Logan. The first one shows a bathroom stall with the words "WHERE ARE ALL THE MUTANTS?" carved in it, and the second (released today), captioned "Rest Stop," shows a pickup truck at a gas station in what appears to be a barren scrubland. Together, these photos begin to cement some key points of the plot, including the backstory of Laura Kinney (X-23), who will most likely be played by Sienna Novikov: first, it's been revealed that Logan will take place in 2024, during a time when mutant births have dropped off dramatically. Laura is one of the few young, new breed, making her a precious commodity for those who want to turn her into a living weapon, like Logan. One way or another, it looks like Logan ends up mentoring Laura in a world devoid of mutants like her.

The other photo, "Rest Stop," seems to lend credence to a road-trip format for the film, with Xavier possibly taking the place of Hawkeye in an Old Man Logan-style trip across the badlands of the U.S. The black-and-white aesthetic of the picture evokes Depression-era photos of a Midwest hit by the Dustbowl. Together with the other photos released on Instagram by wponx, we're getting a clearer and clearer picture of the bleak, brutal aesthetic of the film, which includes images of abandoned structures, sand and dust, and that severed human arm still holding a shotgun. All in all, it looks a lot like another neo-Western, No Country for Old Men, which might just be a good cinematic analogue for a film version of Old Man Logan. We'll see...

Logan will premier in theaters on March 3rd, 2017.
