Here's How You Should Feel About Han Solo's Death, According to J.J. Abrams
How did you feel when Kylo Ren murdered his father, Han Solo? Did you think that Kylo planned to kill him all along? Was his back and forth genuine? Did Han know he was going to die? Well, you no longer have to decide for yourself, because some newly-released director's commentary by J.J. Abrams included on the new Force Awakens 3D Blu-ray re-release reveals the intent of the scene.

Basically, the director states that Kylo Ren was not pulling his dear old dad's leg before he killed him. He really was being convinced to leave the Dark Side, and it was his own inability to admit that he had gone down the wrong path that ultimately caused him to resist redemption and kill his father. He also concedes though, that given the setting of a thin bridge high above an expanse, there was basically no way for the scene to have a happy ending.

A preview clip of the new commentary can be seen over at USA Today, and in it you'll hear Abrams give his opinion on how the scene should have come across. Check it out, and see if you agree.
