War for the Planet of the Apes Director Says Caesar Should Be President
Cue the "an ape would be a better president than Trump" jokes here. War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark think that Caesar, the leader of the apes in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series, should be the President of the United States.

In an interview with About.com at San Diego Comic Con, Clark and Reeves, the latter of whom co-wrote the film with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes writer Mark Bomback, discussed the aspirational nature of Caesar's character:

Opening quote
CLARK: I think a lot of people come to these movies to see what a real hero does in difficult times. While we're not trying to look at any conflict in the world and say "let's do that in this story," I think people come to this movie and feel thematically an experience that is powerful to them because of that. Caesar is wrestling with what it means to be a leader.

It's a very interesting time for this movie to be marketed with the election going on. We think people will come to this movie thinking, "Maybe Caesar should be President of the United States!"

REEVES: We think he should be!
Closing quote

This is hilarious, but all jokes aside, this is an interesting spin for the movie. Planet of the Apes has always been a franchise that had potential for social commentary, from animal rights to imperialism to the treatment of indigenous peoples. If this dumpster fire of a presidential election joins that list, that would make the film feel even more timely than Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which seemed to be commenting on the Israeli/Palestine conflict. We'll see when War for the Planet of the Apes comes out on July 14, 2017.
