Report: J.J. Abrams' Next Movie Is in the Cloverfield Universe
Ever since J.J. Abrams pulled a fast one on us with 10 Cloverfield Lane, fans have suspected that his next sci-fi film, The God Particle, will also take place in the Cloverfield universe. Now, a new report is confirming that fan speculation, and claiming that God Particle will be another installment in the anthology series.

The God Particle follows a team of astronauts who make a "shocking discovery" while exploring another planet and are forced to fight for their survival. It sounds more like Pitch Black than Cloverfield, but The Wrap is reporting that it is, in fact, part of the shared Cloverfield universe.

Although there is no official confirmation yet (the report simply cites "an insider" close to production), I would be very surprised if this weren't true. 10 Cloverfield Lane wasn't at all a proper sequel to Cloverfield, it was just very tangentially related to the same mythology, so the bar for being part of the "shared universe" is very low. And that film already proved that the marketing strategy works; 10 Cloverfield Lane was a relatively obscure indie before it became part of a shared universe, and since the films are being branded as a sort of horror anthology rather than a series of sequels, almost nothing needed to be changed creatively in order to market it to a wider audience. It's a win-win.

The God Particle stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O'Dowd. It's slated to open in theaters on February 24, 2017.
