Character Details for Star Trek: Discovery Revealed
The news just broke that Bryan Fuller would be stepping down as showrunner for Star Trek: Discovery, which is a huge bummer for all Star Trek fans who were hoping to see his vision for the franchise. However, the show must go on, and we now have basic descriptions for the six main characters.

While reporting on Fuller's departure, THR revealed their character breakdown:

Sources tell THR that the rest of the cast also will feature an openly gay actor as one of the male leads (which Fuller confirmed), a female admiral, a male Klingon captain, a male admiral, a male adviser and a British male doctor.

Some of this we already knew: Fuller had already announced that the main character would be a racially diverse female character who was not a captain, and that she would be known only as "Number One." And we also knew that Discovery would continue the commitment to LGBT representation begun with the announcement that Sulu is openly gay, and would include a gay main character (although we didn't realize he would be played by an openly gay actor).

The other descriptions are somewhat generic, except for the reveal that there will be a top-billed Klingon captain, which is interesting. Many fans have observed that the ship in the teaser looks like a Klingon-Federation hybrid (there's even a hint of a Klingon cloaking device at the end), and this casting news may further tease that Discovery will have both human and Klingon crew members. While this hasn't been confirmed yet, integrating both Klingons and humans into the crew would open up a whole host of possibilities.
