New Doctor Strange Clip Reveals a Tantalizing Glimpse of [SPOILER]
We are four days away from seeing Doctor Strange in theaters, and the interdimensional hype train is going strong, bolstered by critical acclaim from the likes of Empire and Variety (Scott Derrickson is reportedly jonesing for a sequel already). We've reported on some other spoiler-y news about the movie, including the leaked post-credits sequence, but today we got a very subtle glimpse at a very important character in the Strange canon. His menacing eyes appear at 0:41 in this new promo spot:

It's subtle and easy to miss, but those purple eyes might belong to Strange's arch-nemesis, Dormammu. If you're dubious, consider that [DOUBLE SPOILER] Dormammu, the evil tyrant of the Dark Dimension, has already been confirmed to appear in the Doctor Strange movie, played by none other than Cumberbatch himself (at least for motion-capture--the voice is "some British guy I don't remember," according to Scott Derrickson). It looks like Kaecilius, the scary-looking person in the promo with the running eyeliner (played by Mads Mikkelsen), might be trying to summon Dormammu out of the Dark Dimension.

For a quick run-down on Dormammu, here's the gist: as Cumberbatch says in the promo, Doctor Strange operates on the idea that the universe is actually made of multiple universes and realities, one where almost anything is possible. One of these alternate dimensions, according to the comics, is the Dark Dimension, a reality filled with portals to uncounted pocket dimensions and immense mystical energy. The original rulers of the Dimension were usurped by Dormammu, who tricked them into entering the realm of the Mindless Ones, indestructible beings of pure destruction, where (big surprise) they were absolutely destroyed. Dormammu would go on to assume the throne of the Dark Dimension and threaten our universe, becoming Doctor Strange's most powerful and persistent enemy. Also, he had a flaming skull-head in the comics. No sign of that so far.

In a lot of ways, Dormammu (and much of Strange's multiverse) resembles the terrifying universe of H.P. Lovecraft, filled with extradimensional threats, realms of bizarre monsters and strange beings, and Earth just kind of occupying a corner of it all, relatively unnoticed. We've spoken before about why Doctor Strange doesn't help the Avengers with threats like alien invasions--it's mostly because he's dealing with threats like Dormammu.

Besides a glimpse of those creepy purple eyes and a short lecture on multiverse theory from Cumberbatch, another promo spot for the movie shows some more of the Cloak of Levitation, which by this point seems like a reincarnation of the sassy magic carpet from Aladdin:
