Lauren Cohan Was Unsure of Maggie's Fate When the Finale Was Filmed
Spoilers for The Walking Dead follow!
In the season premiere of The Walking Dead, we finally found out who Negan killed at the end of last season, and it was pretty much exactly who we were all expecting: Abraham and Glenn. But then, when alternate footage leaked that showed Maggie taking Negan's bat instead of Abraham, many began to speculate that the producers considered killing off Maggie instead. Now, it seems that might not have been too far off, as Lauren Cohan says that she wasn't 100% sure of Maggie's fate when the footage was filmed.
While appearing on LIVE with Kelly, Cohan said that her fate was "very touch and go," and when asked if she knew who died when they filmed the finale, she said:
"We had actually, we filmed everybody's ending, demise, so there was honestly like some thought sometimes 'well, if they change their mind they'll have it on tape.' But no, we sort of knew like at the end of last season what was going to happen, and had time to make our farewells and begin to cope with it."
We already knew that The Walking Dead filmed multiple death scenes to throw everyone off, but it was unclear whether they were ever considering using any of the footage aside from Abraham and Glenn's. At first, the cast said they had no idea who died, but it became clear over the course of the summer that that was highly improbable, and Michael Cudlitz revealed after the finale aired that they were lying, and that he and Steven Yeun have known about their characters' fates for over a year.
That being said, it does sound like the producers may have given the actors the impression that they could potentially change their minds during post-production. Or maybe they just all think they could be killed off at any time, which, you know, isn't entirely unreasonable.
The Walking Dead airs on Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
