Universal Has Officially Greenlit A Live-Action Voltron Movie
Here's a quick way to infuriate someone who grew up during the Eighties—call Voltron a "Transformer". It's like saying R2-D2 was the best robot in Star Trek. Voltron fans got a huge reason to celebrate when DreamWorks and Netflix greenlit the new animated series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, which has been a hit among the nostalgia crowd and new fans alike. Well, now there's a new reason to start working on those cardboard Voltron cosplay outfits: Universal has confirmed that a live-action film is in the works.

Mark Gordon, who's produced TV shows like Criminal Minds and Designated Survivor as well as films like Saving Private Ryan, has been the driving force behind getting the film off the ground, and now David Hayter (who worked on several of the X-Men movies and the live-action version of Watchmen) has been tapped to write the screenplay. There's no release date given for the movie yet and no word on who might be chosen to portray the Paladins, but so far we know that the movie will not be associated with the Netflix series.

Though there aren't many details yet, die-hard movie fans know how long and hard Gordon had to fight to get this project out of development hell. It was originally announced back in 2007, when the Transformers movies were still riding high, but from there it ran into some complications—lawsuit complications. The fact that it's back and greenlit again is nothing short of amazing. Voltron may be late to the party, but with movies like Pacific Rim coming back for another round and Transformers still inexplicably cranking out movies, there's still time to crash it.

Kind of like this:

Stay funky, Voltron fans.
