Doctor Strange May Have Revealed Captain Marvel's New Origin Story
Doctor Strange finally came out this weekend, and it was chock-full of references, Easter eggs, and teasers for future Marvel movies. Now, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has confirmed some of those teasers, including a possible allusion to Captain Marvel's new backstory.

In Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange is interested in working on a new patient who was struck by lightning, which creates health complications as a result of her brain implant, used to relieve her schizophrenia. When asked by EW if that was a direct reference to Carol Danvers, Derrickson reportedly smiled and said he could "neither confirm nor deny."

Fans of the comics will note that this is not terribly similar to her canonical origin story, in which she gained her powers when she was caught in an explosion from a Kree device, which essentially turned her into a human-Kree hybrid. However, co-writer Nicole Perlman said back in August that her origin would likely change the parts that involved alien technology (which is pretty much all of it) in order to avoid comparisons with Green Lantern.

If true, this new twist to Captain Marvel's origin story is interesting, particularly the focus on a mental illness. This immediately reminds me of the X-Men show Legion, which, judging from the New York Comic Con footage, already seems much more character-driven than many other superhero properties. There's always the worry that these narratives will be insensitive to mental illness, but barring that, this sounds like a fascinating spin on the character.

Doctor Strange is now out in theaters, while Captain Marvel comes out on March 8, 2019.
