New Transformers: The Last Knight IMAX Featurette Reveals First Set Footage
People make fun of Michael Bay for making movies that are purely explosion-based. They say there's very little plot, a lot of attractive actors, and some groundbreaking effects, but at heart, it's all about the spectacle. But that's arguably the fun of it all. With the Transformers movies, Bay gets to do what he does best, as exemplified by the opening 20 seconds of the new featurette from IMAX. In those first 20 seconds, we get the standard action movie trailer "BWWOOM" bass notes, giant robots flying at one another over a cityscape, collapsing glass-paned buildings, people screaming "OH MY GOOOOOOOD" and some honest-to-god Matrix-style bullet time. It's almost comical how over-the-top these little clips are, but those aren't even from the new movie—that footage starts at around 1:18:

So The Last Knight is going to be more...medieval. We've got knights on horseback, corpse-strewn fields littered with banners, battle scenes in full armor with guys getting thrown around by explosions, and what appears to be King Arthur in a flowing red cape. We also have modern-day soldiers being deployed in urban settings and car chases through what appear to be European streets. We're guessing there's gonna be a significant time travel plot going on in this movie. According to a supposed leak released on JoBlo, the plot of the new movie goes something like this:

Opening quote
The story for Transformers: The Last Night will involve Optimus Prime finding his home planet, Cybertron, now a dead planet, which he comes to find he was responsible for killing. He finds a way to bring the planet back to life, but in order to do so he needs to find an artifact. And of course, that artifact is on Earth...Somehow the artifact ties into Merlin, the magician of King Arthur lore. Apparently, the power of magic was given to Merlin by a Transformer and somehow the artifact ties into this.

As far as what the artifact is, we can't say, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with the famed sword Excaliber...Of course, we've seen the effects of time travel in these films already and are aware of Transformers visiting Earth throughout the planets existence, so that certainly fits with the universe they've created and now it appears that the story will add British Mythology to the narrative.
Closing quote

Now, when this "leak" first came out, it was considered a little too far-fetched even for a Transformers movie. But looking at the footage in the featurette, it looks like the King Arthur angle is all but assured. Without giant skyscrapers to crash into for the robot fights, will Bay be forced to substitute huge stone castle turrets? Will Merlin turn out to be a time-travelling Ford Model T? Will giant, conveniently placed barrels of black powder provide the requisite explosions? So many questions.

Transformers: The Last Knight premieres in US theaters on June 23rd, 2017.
