Emilia Clarke Has Been Cast in the Han Solo Anthology Film
With Rogue One premiering in less than a month and the promise of a new franchise film every year for eternity (or at least until it becomes unviable), it's certainly an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Though Rogue One will be the first non-episodic cinematic entry into the Star Wars universe, there's a lot of hype for what is currently planned to be the second: the Han Solo anthology film. Just a little over a week ago, it was announced that Donald Glover would be taking on the role of Lando Calrissian, and now, another exciting casting announcement has been made. Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame has officially been cast for what is presumably the female lead.

The news comes from Disney, and not much is being said about Clarke's role except that she will "round out a dynamic cast of characters Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures." Still, Clarke's casting comes as somewhat of a surprise; several sources have reported that Tessa Thompson and Zoe Kravitz were two of the top contenders for the female lead and that Disney was looking specifically for a non-white actress to play the part. Of course, all of that could still be true, but it seems unlikely that the directors would hire such a big-name actress for a small role in the film. It would also be somewhat unusual for Disney to announce Clarke's involvement before they did the female lead, suggesting that Clarke may indeed be the lead.

Whatever the case, Disney and Lucasfilm seem to have a solid gameplan for the film, with principal photography set to start in January and the cast obviously filling out quite nicely. Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, and Emilia Clarke are all incredibly talented actors and actresses, and it's going to be exciting to see how they're able to bring the characters to life in a new (but hopefully nostalgic) way.

The Han Solo standalone film is currently slated for a release on May 25, 2018.
