Get Ready For a Lot More Ghostbusters Movies
The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot didn't exactly scare up big box office returns over the summer. The movie's $229 million worldwide take at the box office was less than such "bombs" as Alice Through the Looking Glass and Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, and was even less than what the original Ghostbusters made in 1985 - without accounting for inflation. And given that the reboot had a budget of $144 million and marketing costs reported to be at least that amount, it's probably safe to assume that the movie lost Sony a good deal of money. But that doesn't mean the Ghostbusters franchise is dead, as it might return from the grave yet again.

Ivan Reitman, the director of the franchise's first two films and a producer on the latest, was asked about the previously planned sequel to the film during an appearance on the Mr. Wavvy podcast, and he responded by saying, "There's going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, they're just in development right now."

You'll notice what Reitman didn't say is that there's going to be a sequel to the Ghostbusters we saw this year, just that other Ghostbusters movies are in development. Whether this is in the form of a continuation of the original franchise, the previously rumored Channing Tatum/Christ Pratt-led film, or something completely unrelated, is anyone's guess.

The 2016 Ghostbusters really wasn't a bad movie, but one would think its lackluster box office performance would give Sony pause before they pursue "many other" Ghostbusters movies. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
