'Rogue One' on Track For a $300 Million Opening Weekend
Rogue One finally hits theaters this weekend, and the movie is preparing for a massive box office haul.

According to Variety's estimates, the newest Star Wars film is tracking to bring in up to $150 million in North America and $150 million from other markets, combining for a worldwide opening gross of $300 million. That's a massive number, but just where does it stack up against other films?

First of all, the film will fall well short of last year's The Force Awakens. That film earned a gargantuan $248 million in North America alone for its opening weekend, and another $281 million in the rest of the world, giving it over $529 million worldwide - a record. It also went on to become the fastest movie ever to reach $1 billion, doing so in just 12 days. But the hype for TFA, which was the looooong awaited sequel to Return of the Jedi, was considerably higher than the hype for Rogue One (or any movie, for that matter).

If Rogue One manages to snag a $300 million worldwide opening, that will still be good enough for it to just crack the top twenty all-time, and it will be the third best opening of the year behind Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War. A $150 million domestic opening would be 14th all-time, and would still rank as third for 2016 after the aforementioned films. Overall, not a bad showing for a scrappy group of Rebels.
