Yes, Ben Affleck's Batman Movie Will Start Shooting In Spring
We originally heard that Ben Affleck's new standalone Batman movie (the "Batfleck" movie, as its been dubbed) would start shooting in spring 2017, but after a couple very recent comments from Affleck himself we checked our enthusiasm and made peace with the possibility that spring was more of a vague, tentative goal that was subject to change. We were okay with waiting—as Affleck himself said, if you're going to make a Batman movie, you should make the time to do it right:

Opening quote
I'm a real believer in not doing, not reverse-engineering projects to meet a window or a date, but rather like when you get the right story or you get the right idea or you get the right thing, then you make the movie. And so that's what we're doing, and I'm hoping to get that done and spending a lot of time on that, but I'm also working on other stuff. And if I could, if I can find it right then there's nothing I'd love more than to direct a standalone, you know, iconic great Batman movie...I'm really mindful of that, and so I'm not in any hurry to jam the mediocre movie down the pipe.

This seemed like a soft way of saying "we have no idea when this is gonna happen, but it will" from Affleck. Yesterday, however, Affleck seemed to laugh all that off and reaffirmed to Variety that shooting will begin next spring. Here's what he said about where they were with the schedule:

Opening quote
"We're on the right track with that and everything is coming together," he said. "We're still finishing up a script. I'm very excited."

But what about taking his time and making a movie worthy of the Batman tradition? Well, Affleck hasn't forgotten about that, or what he's up against:

Opening quote
"I respect all of those [Batman] movies," he said. "Christopher Nolan did an incredible job, Christian Bale did an incredible job, Tim Burton did an incredible job. At a certain point you have to look forward and try to believe in your own vision for it and not be looking over your shoulder the whole time. I go into that movie with a tremendous amount of respect for the people who came before me."

So screw all that wishy-washy non-committal rumbling, apparently. Affleck plans to start filming in spring, and we're gonna be looking at that sweet batsuit again soon enough. It will be particularly fun comparing Affleck's gadgets to the ones fans have made this time around—the bat-scientists over at the Hacksmith recently built a fully-functional Batman grappling hook gun (the hook is even batwing-shaped!) and a power winch that can lift a fully grown person. Soon we'll be able to grapple-hook our way right onto Affleck's apartment balcony and personally ask him when we can expect a trailer.
