Did 'Star Trek: Discovery' Casting News Spoil the Next TWD Death?
In case you hadn't heard, Sonequa Martin-Green has officially been announced as the new lead of Star Trek: Discoveryplaying the previously mysterious 'Number One'. While this is incredibly exciting for Star Trek fans, Walking Dead fans may be getting a sinking feeling: Martin-Green probably can't work full-time on both shows, so she's probably going to have to step away from TWD to make space in her schedule. Unfortunately, "stepping away" from TWD means you're probably going to make your exit from the show via a horrific onscreen death. The last time something like this happened was with Glenn (Steven Yeun) and the film Okjaand we all know how that ended: Yeun's role in the show was gracefully brought to an end via Negan's barbed wire bat so he could move on to work on the movie.

On top of this casting development, CBR points out that throughout the show Sasha has really been playing the role of a different character from the comics: Holly. Like Sasha, Holly's main love interest was Abraham, and once Abraham dies at the hands of Negan, Holly decides she's going to take the fight to him. Holly's story ends with her crashing a truck into the gates of Sanctuary and being swarmed by zombies, but not before Negan saves her, tortures her, and sends her back to Rick as a prisoner exchange, only to reveal that Holly has become a zombie. It stands to reason that if Martin-Green is going to leave the show the showrunners are going to take the opportunity to reenact these events (which are very important plot points in the comics) in the TV series, too.

So between her new headlining role on Discovery and the plot parallels between Sasha and Holly, the smart money is that Martin-Green is marked for death on TWD. Behind-the-scenes casting developments can be a temperamental bellwether when it comes to predicting plot developments on big-name shows, but as we saw with Steve Yeun, they can be surprisingly accurate, too.
