This 'Rogue One' Character Was Supposed to Be a Jedi
The Art of Rogue One came out last week, and brought us a beautiful set of concept art for the film with it. But as is the case with all of the Star Wars art books, it also contains insights into the story development and the original script, including one character who was supposed to be a Jedi.

Spoiler warning!

As we all know by now, Galen and his family were in hiding from the Empire as a result of his work on the Death Star and his ability to complete it. But in the original Rogue One script, they were also staying under the radar because they were afraid that Lyra Erso, Jyn's mother, would be discovered as one of the few remaining Jedi. According to screenwriter Chris Weitz:
Opening quote
For a long time in the story, there were Jedi around, even if only in the background-Jyn's mother was a Jedi. But we thought that it would be more interesting to have a story without Force powers-without lightsabers.

We could explore a period of broken faith, a galaxy without hope. There's despair because the Jedi are gone-and with them, for many, even the memory of the Force. We know from A New Hope that Luke Skywalker hasn't even heard of the Force, out on distant Tatooine. That meant our story could be about normal people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.
Closing quote

According to Weitz, Lyra's role would have stayed essentially the same—she would have died at the beginning after fighting against Krennic—this just would have been an added layer of meaning. It would have been interesting if Lyra's role had been a little more complex, considering that she dies so quickly, but their reasoning also makes sense. Rogue One partially succeeded on the notion that the central characters were more "everypeople," which gave it a distinct feel from the other films, and giving Lyra Jedi status might have made the movie feel more redundant.

Rogue One is now out in theaters.
