'Jurassic World 2' Director Wants To Helm A Superman Movie
Director J.A. Bayona has had quite a successful career as a moviemaker, having won a Goya Award in 2008 for best new director and receiving plenty of critical acclaim for essentially every film he's made. Most recently, Bayona directed A Monster Calls, a story about a young boy who cares for his terminally ill mother and also befriends a monster; his next project is 2018's sequel to Jurassic World. The director did an AMA (ask me anything) about the film on Reddit this week, in which he also answered a question regarding what his dream project would be.

Opening quote
The first movie I saw in my life was Superman. I was three years old. The first memory I had was Christopher Reeve flying in the suit. Directing a Superman film would be great. I always wanted to be Superman. That's the film that made me want to become a director.
Closing quote

It's intriguing enough just to know that Bayona was first inspired by Richard Donner, but it's also pretty big news for a director of Bayona's standing to openly say he'd like to take on a comic book movie. As Man of Steel 2 has been confirmed to be in pre-development, it's entirely possible that Bayona could get a shot at his dream. Zack Snyder recently said he plans on taking a break from the superhero genre between Justice League and its sequel, so it's also probable that Man of Steel 2 still doesn't have a director attached. Someone more inspired by the Reeve era of Superman is probably exactly what Warner Bros. is looking for as well, considering their apparent new commitment to bringing a lighter tone to the DCEU.

Bayona's outstanding work in cinema should be enough to catch Warner Bros. eye, but it's impossible to know whether or not they'll nab him while they can. A Bayona helmed sequel to Man of Steel sounds almost too good to be true, and the DCEU obviously hasn't been on their game lately when it comes to thinking through their creative decisions. It would be disappointing if Bayona didn't get the chance to take on his dream project, and not for him only, but for the fans as well.

The next installation in the DCEU is Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, slated for a June 2nd release. Bayona's Jurassic Park 2 is currently scheduled to release June 22, 2018.
