'Wonder Woman' Villain is Revealed by a French Magazine
The news for Wonder Woman has so far been rather light on character details, beyond (of course) Gal Gadot starring as Wonder Woman, and Chris Pine playing the soldier and love interest Steve Trevor. But French magazine Studio Ciné Live, which went onto the film set and interviewed the cast and crew, learned some crucial details about the plot and the villain. Spoiler warning.

According to French site Les Toiles Heroiques (which also includes some set photos), the film's villain is set to be Ares, God of War. In the DC Extended Universe version of Greek mythology, Ares apparently killed his father Zeus before the film begins, being jealous that Zeus created humans and the Amazons. The Greek pantheon has a big presence in the comic books, so it makes sense that they'll have a suitably big presence here.

But what does Ares want? In the comic books, Ares draws his power from people warring with each other, which would make him fit easily into the film's World War I setting. But the other big news from the magazine was an interview snippet from Pine, who says of his character:

Opening quote
"I play a pilot who works for the Allies and spies on the Germans without their knowledge. My character steals a notebook filled with scientific formulas in an Ottoman base, he steals a plane but is shot down in the open sea."
Closing quote

The scientific formulas contain a deadly poison gas, which Ares apparently wants for some sinister purpose. We don't yet know who's playing him, though Danny Huston looked rather menacing in the trailers which makes him a good guess for now. And since Elena Anaya also appears in a mysterious role, the "poison" element of the storyline could mean she play Doctor Poison, a classic Wonder Woman villain who, well, works with poison. Someone will have to in the movie, so why not get the expert?

Wonder Woman comes out on June 2, 2017.
