Netflix's 'iBoy' Trailer Involves Smartphone-Based Superpowers
Netflix has only been releasing original movies for a short time now and there's already a huge variety, from the serious war drama Beasts of No Nation to Adam Sandler's The Do-Over. And now they seem to be dipping their feet into a mixture of sci-fi and superhero genres, with their trailer for iBoy.

Starring Bill Milner and notably Maisie Williams, who also stars on Game of Thrones as Arya Stark, the film has the odd premise of a boy who gains technopathic superpowers after an assault leaves bits and pieces of his smartphone stuck inside his brain. It's an idea that not everyone may be onboard with, presumably going off the notion that since smartphones are capable of surviving in a washing machine, they must also give you superpowers. But the premise aside, a sci-fi film about a boy who can control technology in an increasingly technology-heavy world certainly has merit.

Milner, who played a young Magneto at the beginning of X-Men: First Class, will star as Tom the iBoy (no, they probably won't call him that in the movie), while Williams will play his friend Lucy, whom a villainous gang wants for some sinister reason. Miranda Richardson and Rory Kinnear will also play important supporting roles. Here's the official synopsis:
Opening quote
Tom is an average teenager whose world is turned on its head when a violent encounter with local thugs leaves fragments of his shattered smartphone embedded in his brain. He wakes from a coma to discover that returning to normal teenage life is impossible because he has developed a strange set of superpowers. With these new powers he sets out to seek revenge on the gang, who also assaulted his best friend Lucy.
Closing quote

The trailer's not clear on what model of smartphone is stuck inside his head. Hopefully it's not a Galaxy Note 7, otherwise the film may have an explosively unhappy ending.

iBoy comes out on January 27, 2017 on Netflix.
