'Legion' Will Not Take Place Within the X-Men Film Universe
The X-Men cinematic universe is one of the most convoluted ever conceived. Beloved characters die or lose their powers only to show up alive or re-powered in a subsequent film with no explanation, multiple versions exist of minor characters, and the franchise's timeline makes zero sense. That's one reason to be glad that the new X-Men spinoff TV series, Legion, will take place in a completely different universe than the films.

Series producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently sat down with IGN and confirmed as much, saying, "No, we're making it separate. We're our own world," when asked if they faced challenges in getting the show to align with the movies. She also said that, if the show does involve characters like Professor X down the road, it will be a version we've never seen before.

As far as the decision to make the series exist separately from the movies, Donner said:
Opening quote
"With Legion, we're our own universe. It gives [series creator Noah Hawley] the freedom to do what he wants to do. Because [the movies] play with so many different timelines, and [they] rebooted and not really rebooted and all that, we felt like, OK, we're going to throw it out there and hope the fans accept it."
Closing quote

This decision isn't unheard of by any means. The DC shows currently on TV don't exist within the same universe as the DC movies, and in some cases they don't even exist within the same universe as each other (see Gotham). The only franchise whose TV and movie properties live together is Marvel, but even they have pretty tenuous connections, with the TV side constantly trying to make connections to the movie side which largely ignores them.

In any case, the decision to keep Legion separate from the rest of the X-Men franchise is a smart one that should free the series up to do some really interesting things - without having us worry whether Hugh Jackman is going to cameo or not.

Legion will premiere on February 8, 2017 on FX.
