HBO Gives an Update on Possible 'Game of Thrones' Spinoff
Game of Thrones is coming to an end next year, and HBO is already scrambling to find a replacement for its most popular show. Sure Westworld is a hit, but it's nowhere near the monster that Game of Thrones is. While a spinoff of the fantasy epic has been rumored for years, HBO hasn't began work on one yet, but they're definitely making plans. At least that's what the network's original programming president, Casey Bloys, told Variety at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday.

"All I can say is that we're exploring it," Bloys said of a GOT spinoff. "We don't have any scripts, we're not even close to saying 'Oh let's do this.' But it's a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it. It's a really rich world. We'd be foolish not to look at it." Bloys also added that series author George R. R. Martin, who does have an additional development deal with HBO, has "plenty of material" within the universe that could form the basis for a prequel or other spinoff series.

The most rumored subject has long been Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" series, which takes place nearly 100 years before Thrones and focuses on the characters Ser Duncan the Tall, an ancestor of Brienne, and Aegon V Targaryen, an ancestor of Daenerys. However, the series is considerably lighter in tone than the one it would be replacing, and would need its violence, sex, and intrigue cranked up much higher if it wants to appeal to as broad an audience as Thrones does. So a more plausible expectation may be an entirely new series that takes place within the world Martin created, but one over which HBO has full creative reign.

We'll have to see what they end up doing, because as of right now, it definitely seems like they're going to do something. In the meantime, Game of Thrones season 7 will premiere in summer 2017.
