'Star Wars' Experts Explain Why Princess Leia Appeared in 'Rogue One'
A big spoiler warning for the five people who have yet to see Rogue One, but Star Wars expert Pablo Hidalgo just answered a question many fans had regarding the end of the film.

A young, CGI Princess Leia shows up briefly the very end, as she receives the Death Star plans that the entire movie had been building toward. After the initial shock has worn off though, many fans began to ask themselves: "Wait, why was she conveniently at this climactic battle in the first place?"

The answer, it would seem, is that the Rebellion has a very scarce amount of ships at this point. The whole thing is explained by members of the Lucasfilm Story Group (including Hidalgo) on an episode of the online series The Star Wars Show, "Rogue One Secrets Explained": Leia was on her way to pick up Obi-Wan, as depicted back in A New Hope, but when the Rebellion heard about the big assault on the beaches of the planet Scarif, they scrambled their entire fleet to aid in the mission. That included the small transport ship Leia was going to use to travel to Tatooine. Thus, as the Rebel and Imperial Forces clashed, her ship was caught in the midst of the struggle and was only able to barely escape from danger.

Further details reveal that in fact Leia was on Yavin 4 at the same time as Rogue One's heroes but her presence was kept a secret so the big cameo at the end would have a bigger impact. It also helps explain why R2-D2 and C3PO are there aside from being the lovable mascots they are in every film.

It's easy to forget sometimes that the Rebellion is still supposed to be operating in secret at this point, and would most likely have a hard time hiding warships and their fleet from the Empire, including the multiple ships to help transport Leia. So this plot hole explanation makes a lot of sense.

The full episode is here, and the explanation of Leia's ship, the Tantive IV, comes up at 19:08:
