'Han Solo' Movie Begins Filming With an Old-School 'Star Wars' Joke
Lucasfilm
The Han Solo film still has no official name yet, even though it's the next Star Wars movie we'll be seeing after The Last Jedi. But having finished the casting process by pulling in Donald Glover (as Lando), Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke, the adventures of young Han are now filming. Still, the question of whether the movie will have a serious tone like the other films, or be more like Harrison Ford's snappy smuggler, was up in the air.

Since the directors are Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the duo behind the 21 Jump Street films and The Lego Movie, you can take a guess:

For those who don't need the joke explained, you can skip this part. Otherwise, "Han First Shot," while conveying that the film's production is now a go, is also a play on the fan rallying cry "Han shot first." In the original version of A New Hope in 1977, Solo's confrontation with greenish bounty hunter Greedo ends with Solo shooting him to save his own skin. But in the remastered version in 1997, George Lucas decided to add a scene of Greedo shooting first, only to miss. It made Solo more traditionally heroic (since he only killed in self defense), and many fans have wholeheartedly rejected that change.

More subtle than that is the film's "working title" of Star Wars: Red Cup, which may change once the Solo cup company learns they're being used for a Star Wars joke. Also, small chance they had American frat parties in a galaxy far, far away, so no Solo cups for Han Solo. But it's good to see that the directors are going with the original scoundrel version of Han, who makes no time for bounty hunters with slow trigger fingers and who apparently parties with plastic cups.

The untitled Han Solo Movie, as-of-now Red Cup, is currently slated for release on May 25, 2018.
