All Four 'Avatar' Sequels Will Start Filming in August
20th Century Fox
After a number of starts and stops over several years, James Cameron says the four(!) Avatar sequels are finally ready to start filming this year - and yes, he's serious.

The writer/director spoke to The Daily Beast over the weekend, where he disclosed that he has just completed the script for the final film in the series, Avatar 5, and that he has started prep to begin filming all four sequels this August in what will likely go down as the biggest movie production in history (if it does in fact take place). Here's his full response after being asked how Avatar 2 was coming along:

Opening quote
"The thing is, my focus isn't on Avatar 2. My focus is on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 equally. That's exactly how I'm approaching it. They've all been developed equally. I've just finished the script to Avatar 5. I'm now starting the process of active prep. I'll be working with the actors in the capture volume in August, so I'm booked in production every day between now and then. Our volume is up and running, and everything is designed, and so we're going full-guns right now. I feel like I've been let out of jail, because I've been in the writing cave for the last two years. I'm actually enjoying life. I don't enjoy writing. I wouldn't wish writing on a dog."
Closing quote

Granted, this isn't the first time we've heard that production was beginning on an Avatar sequel (the first sequel was originally set to premiere in December 2017). Rumors surfaced last year that production would begin this April, but given how this new August date is coming from Cameron himself, we're giving it a little more credence than past rumors.

Even though it looks like these Avatar sequels will finally get made, there's still the question of whether or not they should be. Although Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all-time worldwide, there isn't much of a fanbase clamoring for another installment. Everyone watched Avatar, it was big news, and then many forgot about it. So unless Cameron can make the new films as technologically groundbreaking as the original, which he very well may do, then we will have all wasted a lot of time waiting around for these movies.

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to come out December 21, 2018, though this is subject to change.
