Hulu has been coming out with original series for a few years now (including 11.22.63) but for the upcoming show The Handmaid's Tale they've decided to go all-out with a media blitz that includes buying a 30-second Super Bowl spot for a reported $5 million dollars. Here it is:

The series, which is based on the book by Margaret Atwood and stars Elisabeth Moss, centers on a world where women have essentially become property again: women are meant to serve, bear children, and look pretty. Their own dreams and identities have been erased and in their place, they are referred to only by the the men who command them—"Offred," aka "Of Fred," is Moss' character, for instance. She, along with many of the other major female characters, had a family and life of her own, but had it taken away when a radical religious group called the Sons of Jacob declares martial law and begin to systematically impose its own pseudo-Biblical beliefs on society.

In some striking ways, the series resembles the Alfonso Cuaron movie "Children Of Men": an increasingly infertile population has made creating offspring a top priority, making it a sign of status to be able to have children and turning fertile women into commodities. However, the Puritan aesthetic of the series (coifs, cloaks, etc.) paired with modern technological fixtures (maternity wards, hospitals) emphasizes how the past and the future have collided into a society that's both fundamentalist and terrifyingly authoritarian.

The Handmaid's Tale is set to debut on Hulu on April 26th, 2017.
