'Life' Trailer Shows Alien Attacking Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds
Sony Pictures
You may see a teaser for the upcoming Sony Pictures film Life during the Super Bowl, which wants to remind you that just overhead, the astronauts in the International Space Station may currently be getting attacked by aliens.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Child 44) and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds, Life is a sci-fi thriller about a crew of astronauts aboard the ISS who discover the first traces of life on Mars. If you noticed the "thriller" part of the genre, you can probably guess that once again, extraterrestrial life doesn't take too kindly to us humans.

The trailer, released ahead of the Super Bowl commercial spot, gives a general sense of the plot without showing too much. Reynolds is cracking wise, Gyllenhaal seems a little crazy, no surprises there:

On the one hand, the idea of "first contact with aliens takes a turn" is hardly a new one in science fiction. Based on the trailer, this could be anywhere between Alien and The Thing depending on what exactly happens to that poor scientist, and either way the end result will be chaos on the ISS. But as long as the writing and directing's good, old ideas can still work and so we'll withhold any final judgement until the movie is out.

Interestingly, Life is written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who've worked on mostly comedies like Deadpool and Zombieland. Between them and Reynolds as another Deadpool alum, there's probably going to be at least some wit even if this isn't a comedy. It certainly doesn't look like one.

Life comes out on March 24, 2017.
