Deleted 'Doctor Strange' Scene Shows a Ritual Gone Wrong
Marvel/Disney
We'd heard in the past that Marvel's Doctor Strange had cut some material, in order to trim down Doctor Strange's psychedelic quest to stop cultists from destroying time. But a new deleted scene involving the film's villain is now out online.

To promote the Doctor Strange Blu-ray that hits shelves at the end of the month, Disney/Marvel Studios released one of a handful of deleted scenes to Entertainment Weekly. Titled "Nervous Zealot," it centers on Mads Mikkelsen's cultist sorcerer Kaecilius, and how he's not a particularly forgiving boss:

This is apparently the zealots' first attempt to summon Dormammu in the hopes that he'll grant them eternal life. But there's always one guy who's not completely onboard, and he challenges Kaecilius, who responds rather politely for a supervillain. But when the ritual fails and there's one zealot suspiciously missing his new scar, Kaecilius switches back into regular supervillain mode and gives him a snappy "you have failed me" remark before finishing him off.

Director Scott Derrickson explained to EW why the scene was cut:

Opening quote
"Pauline Kael used to always talk about the director needing to know where the audience wants to be, and at that point of the movie, the audience didn't want to be jumping around, they wanted to stay with Strange, who's on this very interesting, very personal, and very dramatic journey. The intrusion of those scenes was breaking up the soul of the movie in a way that just wasn't necessary.
Closing quote

It makes sense: a failed ritual isn't necessary to the plot, and it's a very standard "bad guy kills a henchman to show he's bad" scene. Still, Mikkelsen did a good job in the role and watching him wisecrack while leering through his creepy, destroyed eyes (not visible in this scene) is entertaining. The movie could've used some more moments like his "Mister Doctor" exchange with Strange.

Doctor Strange
comes out on Blu-ray on February 28, 2017.
