Video game adaptations tend to get a bad reputation, and to be fair, they often deserve it. But we've never had Netflix take a stab at one until today, with the announcement that they have a Castlevania show coming later this year. And they've brought onboard Frederator, the animation studio behind Adventure Time, which is also a good sign.

According to io9, Netflix hid the reveal among their many other announcements today about Iron Fist and Bill Nye Saves the World and others. All they've done so far is list "Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017" in their press release, but if the series is scheduled to come out later this year, more announcements should soon follow.

It's a first for the long running fantasy/horror series from Konami, which typically follows vampire hunter Simon Belmont (or another member of his family) while he goes after Dracula and other supernatural monsters with his trusty whip. The first Castlevania game came out in 1986 on the NES, and Konami has regularly released more of the gothic adventure games since then. The most recent, Lords of Shadow 2, came out in 2014.

Producer Adi Shankar, who's been executive producer on R-rated films like The Grey and Dredd, announced back in 2015 that he'd be working on a Castlevania series with Frederator Studios. But there "where" and "when" and most other details weren't out yet, although he declared it would super violent and somehow satirical:
Opening quote
"Breaking News: I'm producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde. It's going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head.
Closing quote

Assuming this new series is that series (IGN says they confirmed with Shankar since the announcement), the show will also be based on Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, the final game in the series made for the NES. It featured Trevor Belmont instead of Simon as he hunts Dracula, but it's probably a safe assumption regardless to assume that the show will follow a vampire hunter chasing Dracula.
