'Captain Marvel' Screenwriter on Building Marvel's Female Superhero Movie

Captain Marvel is two years away from hitting theaters (although she'll join the huge cast of Infinity War before then) and although the movie has no director yet, Marvel veteran Nicole Perlman has been penning the movie's script, having previously written Guardians of the Galaxy. She's co-writing with Meg LeFauve, a writer on recent Pixar films like Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur.

On a recent episode of The Great Big Beautiful Podcast, Perlman talked about the challenges of finally bringing one the first female-led movies to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides the movie-less Black Widow, most of the MCU is currently dudes, and Perlman says she and LeFauve go back and forth on how that will affect the story of Carol Danvers. Superhero tropes that Iron Man could get away with may be seen differently by audiences with Captain Marvel:
Opening quote
"I think that making sure that Captain Marvel is not somebody who is a hero in spite of her femininity is important. She's a very strong character and her being a woman is part of that strength."
Closing quote

The schedule for the film has also been pushed around, originally slated to be pre-Infinity War in 2018. According to Perlman, that's just part of Marvel Studios' balancing act for connecting all of their films together, and it gives them more time to put together a unique story this far into the MCU:

Opening quote
"Marvel is a little bit of a house of cards in a sense that everything influences everything around it even if its very modular. Figuring out where the story fits in the MCU influences things as well. She's an incredible character, but I will also say that since Marvel has done so many movies already, you really have to go out of your way to make sure her story is fresh and doesn't borrow too heavily from the other films."
Closing quote

While she won't be involved with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Perlman is still a prolific writer right now. Besides Captain Marvel, she's writing the Gamora comic series and the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie with Alex Hirsch (creator of Gravity Falls)

Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, is scheduled to come out on March 8, 2019.
