One of the classic elements of the original Star Wars trilogy was their use of real actors (or elaborate puppets) in almost all the major roles. Admittedly, this may have been due in part to the fact that CGI technology had not been as advanced as Lucas would have liked. Either way, the franchise has returned to using a lot more practical effects, including BB-8 in The Force Awakens and a lot of the props in Rogue One. But what about R2-D2?

With the recent passing of Kenny Baker, the long-time actor behind R2-D2, there was much speculation that the beloved droid would become CGI, or a puppet like BB-8. Turns out that is not the case. Instead, the Hollywood Reporter announced that actor Jimmy Vee will be taking over the role. While he has some pretty big, let's say, wheels, to fill, Vee is excited for the opportunity. In a statement from Oh So Small, an agency that represents "extreme height actors," he said :

Opening quote
"It's been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside the legendary Kenny Baker. Kenny was a fantastic actor and taught me all the 'tricks' on how he brought R2-D2 to life which I will continue to portray in his honour. I'm so excited to be a part of the Star Wars universe and can't wait for everyone to see what we've been working so hard on for the last year."
