'Hellboy 3' Director Says the Film is One Hundred Percent Not Happening
Columbia Pictures
For a while there, it seemed like Hellboy was going to be the next big superhero movie franchise. The first film in 2004 was well-reviewed and successful enough to spawn a sequel, 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army. That movie earned even better reviews and was a much bigger hit at the box office than its predecessor, so talk of a third movie began almost immediately. But no dice.

After nearly a decade of starts and stops, it looks like Hellboy 3 isn't going to happen. We've already heard similar talk from star Ron Perlman, but now Guillermo del Toro, who wrote and directed the first two films, confirmed the sad rumors over Twitter.

The tweet unfortunately leaves no room for daylight, and it seems pretty clear that we've seen the last of Hellboy - at least as we know him. The franchise could still be rebooted by someone other than del Toro, but since the filmmaker was so entwined with the character on screen, it will likely be tough for fans to accept a new incarnation.

At least he's far from gone in the world of comic books, as Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is still writing Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense). For fans of del Toro, you can take some solace in the fact that his Pacific Rim 2 is definitely happening. And who knows, if enough people see it, maybe we'll even get a Pacific Rim 3. Maybe.
