It's no secret that the Alien movies have enjoyed a mixed reception over the years.

After the initially strong debut movie, which blended horror tropes with the dark confines of a spaceship, the series followed up with a war-movie sequel that revolved around blowing up as many monsters as possible. Ever since, the franchise has struggled to find solid footing, both critically and at the box office.

Now Ridley Scott, the director of the original Alien, has returned, and if this four-minute prologue video is to be believed, this latest movie is going to stay as close to the first movie in tone, style, and themes as possible:

The setting of the video, which features a group of spacers getting ready for a long voyage into space by having a small drunken party, feels very reminiscent of a similar scene in the original Alien, which is cut short when a xenomorph burst out of the chest of John Hurt's character. Everything, from the camera shots to the tone of the conversation to the opening long, stretching shot of a ship crawling through the depths of space, seems designed to tug viewers' nostalgic heartstrings.

For many fans, this is what they've been hoping for, especially considering that Ridley Scott's last movie in the franchise, Prometheus, deviated quite far from the standard Alien formula. Here's hoping, though, that there'll be some original ideas in the mix as well.
