Patrick Stewart Announces 'Logan' will be His Final 'X-Men' Movie
20th Century Fox
While Logan certainly won't be the final X-Men movie ever, it's significant for being Hugh Jackman's final performance as Wolverine. Also, as we just learned, expect it to be Patrick Stewart's final heart-wrenching performance as Professor Charles Xavier.

Stewart broke the news at a SiriusXM Town Hall, according to EW, shortly after seeing a screening of the film with Jackman and director James Mangold. It wasn't that he was waiting for the right moment to announce he was retiring his Cerebro helmet; he simply hadn't decided until just recently. Being brought to tears by the end of the film made him realize there'd be no better swan song for his Professor X than Logan.

Here's Stewart's full, emotional quote on the matter:
Opening quote
"Maybe it was the company of these two guys [Jackman and Mangold], but the movie ended and - this is an admission - but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing... So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, 'I'm done too. It's all over.'"
Closing quote

He's hinted at this before, but it sounds like he was still floating the idea around for some time, until he finally made it so. While it's fantastic to hear how much Stewart loves the movie, it's a double-edged sword that he thinks it's a perfect note to end his role on. But despite looking amazing for his age, the man is still 76 years old and if he sees a strong opportunity to retire the character, then he's earned that.

Much like Jackman, Stewart has played Charles Xavier for the past 17 years, since the first X-Men film at the turn of the century. Since the franchise is continuing on with X-Men: Supernova, to star Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, it's likely that James McAvoy will permanently be the bald head of the X-Men from now on. Other upcoming X-Men projects include Deadpool 2, a New Mutants film, and an untitled TV show.

Logan comes out on March 3, 2017. You can read our review of the film here.
