If there's one thing that everyone can agree on with regards to Ghost in the Shell, it's that the footage we've already seen looks incredible. One design that really stands out is that of the robot geishas, who appear in several trailers and hit Uncanny Valley territory perfectly: they're absolutely beautiful, and terrifyingly creepy.

Mythbusters alum Adam Savage, who now runs an awesome website called Tested, has recently produced a new video interview with Richard Taylor, a representative of the team at Weta, who was responsible for making both masks and animatronics that bring these disturbing androids to life. Check it out below!

The entire video is worth watching, but for the really amazing sights of clockwork animatronic robot heads, skip ahead to around the eight-minute mark.

It's absolutely wonderful to see the care and attention that's gone into these designs. Weta has a long history of creating amazing practical effects, and it really shows how much of a difference that makes when it comes to the finished creation.

Perhaps it's because more care and thought has to go into a practical model, where artists and engineers are limited by what can be legitimately created, but it's clear from the added weight and presence that the geisha robots have in the Ghost in the Shell trailers that choosing to create real, working animatronics really adds an additional level of realism to the film.

In the video, Taylor states that the technology to make these models didn't exist two years ago—by keeping abreast of developments in robotics, the effects studio is able to produce increasingly impressive models and creations for each movie they work on. In practical terms, this means that movie props and effects are only going to get better, and that's great news for fans of beautiful science fiction.
