'Star Trek: Discovery' Should Hopefully Premiere by Early Fall
CBS
For Star Trek fans, waiting for Star Trek: Discovery's long-delayed premiere has been torturous, but there may be some relief on the way. Eventually.

On Monday, CBS head Les Moonves was at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, where he stated that the series would premiere "sometime late summer, early fall we're looking at probably right now," according to Deadline. The lack of a firm premiere date will likely continue to annoy the fans, but at least Moonves suggests the reason for delay is quality control. "It's important to get it right, and Star Trek is the family jewels," he said. "We're not going to rush it in. There's a lot of post-production. But I'm very confident based on what I've seen so far."

The series was originally scheduled to premiere this May, but lost its planned showrunner Bryan Fuller and only entered production just last month, pushing back its premiere indefinitely. Also likely playing a part in the delay is figuring out the unusual plan for how exactly the series will air. While its first episode will air on CBS, all other episodes will only be available through CBS's streaming service, CBS All-Access, which costs users $5.99 per month with commercials (it's a few dollars more for zero commercials).

With the service basically only offering reruns of CBS shows, which are broadcast over the air for free, Star Trek: Discovery will be All Access's main draw. But will Trekkies really be willing to shell out for it? Moonves thinks so:
Opening quote
"There are millions and millions of Trekkies out there. We know for a fact that the other versions of Star Trek - there were seven other series, some of them were great and some of them were terrible - they all did really well on Netflix. That gave us great confidence that this was the right choice to put the full court press on All Access."
Closing quote

It remains to be seen how well the series will do on CBS All Access, but it sounds like we could find out this fall. Maybe.
