Ridley Scott's next chapter in the Alien franchise isn't your average space action movie or sci-fi horror flick—on the one hand, the new trailer follows classic Alien horror tropes, such as a facehugger bursting from a pod, a xenomorph running down a corridor, and a lot of screaming. At the same time, though, it seems that this movie has a much larger focus on characterization and the emotional connections woven throughout its large cast of characters, which is made up almost entirely of couples.

Here's the trailer:

Considering that we've seen xenomorphs terrorizing spaceships and human colonies alike plenty of times before, the most satisfying assurance that this new trailer provides is that it feels very much like the original Alien, with some of James Cameron's action-packed sequel thrown in for good measure.

This trailer also has a compelling mystery element to it: Covenant seems to revolve around the colonization of an alien world and the question of what happened to the planet's previous inhabitants. It looks like it's going to tackle both sides of the debate surrounding exploration of the galaxy—the terrifying fear of the unknown and the hopeful optimism that leads humans to try to build civilizations on other planets.

It remains to be seen whether this juxtaposition of themes will work within the confines of a single movie. It's pretty safe to say that the horror side of Alien: Covenant will likely win out, but it'll be interesting to see how the movie deals with its emotional core: the relationships aboard the Covenant.
