If there's one thing that stands out from James Mangold's superhero movie Logan, it's the degree to which this film works to separate itself from standard comic book movie silliness. The movie itself is gritty and grounded, but in spite of this darker tone, it still pauses long enough to pay tribute to its source material wherever possible, including an in-universe comic book that details fictional X-Men adventures.

These comic pages don't come from real books published by Marvel, but were instead specially commissioned for the movie, and were drawn by some of the biggest names on the comics industry. One artist, Dan Panosian, has shared on Twitter a few of the pages he drew, which can be seen briefly as Logan casually thumbs through a comic book during one scene.

It's fun to see just how much attention was given to little details within this movie, and it's equally refreshing to watch a comic book movie which, while dark and gritty, isn't afraid to wear its inspiration on its sleeve—the same can be said of its western inspirations, which, YouTuber Mr Sunday Movies notes, are among the many Easter Eggs and references scattered throughout the film.

Perhaps the reason why Logan can be so blatant in paying homage to its past without compromising the tone of the movie is because of just how well it sells the grounded realism of the story. The movie doesn't avoid showing off inventive mutant powers, but it keeps things believable in a way that comic book movies haven't done in a long time.
