While we already know that the hero of Star Trek: Discovery will be Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead), we also know that in a first for the series, the hero won't also be the captain. The captain of the titular USS Discovery will still be an important role, however, and Jason Isaacs has officially been cast in the part.

Isaacs will play Captain Lorca of the starship Discovery, making him the direct supervisor of the heroic Number One, played by Martin-Green. More specific character details haven't been released yet, but given Isaacs' history of playing villains, along with the fact that there'd be no drama if the main character and captain agreed on everything, you might expect him to to be a more morally ambiguous captain than normal (closer to Captain Sisko than Picard, if you will).

While most recently appearing as the villainous doctor in Netflix's The OA, Isaacs is also well known for playing Lucius Malfoy, the aristocratic Death Eater from throughout the Harry Potter films, starting with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He's also starred as Jackson Brodie in the BBC series Case Histories, along with starring roles in the shows Dig, Brotherhood, and Awake.

Also appearing in the show will be Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as a rival starship captain of the USS Shenzou, Doug Jones (Hellboy, Mimic) as science officer Saru, James Frain (Gotham) as Spock's father Sarek, and Anthony Rapp, Terry Serpico, and Mary Wiseman in other roles. After an initial premiere on CBS, the show will then move into the network's streaming service, CBS All Access.

Star Trek: Discovery is scheduled to come out summer or fall 2017, although a specific release date has not been set.
