Zack Snyder Shows Off Behind-the-Scenes Photo of Aquaman in 'Justice League'
Last week, Justice League director Zack Snyder took to Twitter to share some early footage of Jason Momoa's Aquaman gliding effortlessly through the water. Excited fans of the the character have wondered how well DC would manage to create a believable live-action portrayal of a character who spends most of his time underwater, but after seeing the short clip, fans began to debate whether the footage is genuine live action, wholly CGI, or some combination of the two.

In answer to these questions, Snyder has again taken to social media to share a photo of Momoa recording this clip, suspended in the air while surrounded by a green screen:

After a side-by-side look at Snyder's latest photo and earlier footage, it's clear that while Momoa is really on-set, various elements—such as his hair—have been achieved digitally instead. This is another instance of Snyder using a middle ground between CGI and live-action, with an earlier example being the visual effects reel for Batman v Superman, shared last month.

The question, at least with regards to Aquaman, is whether the kind of carefully created CGI underwater effects present in this clip will hold up for various other scenes, most notably choreographed fights. The big challenge facing Snyder and Aquaman director James Wan is to create these very artificial movie scenes in a way that feels organic and believable.

Justice League hits US theaters on November 17th, 2017.
