'Alien: Covenant' Reveals Grotesque New Aliens at SXSW
20th Century Fox
Director Ridley Scott, who's in charge of the upcoming Alien: Covenant, screened some footage from the movie at SXSW after giving the following introduction: "My goals haven't changed. My mantra has always been to scare the living sh– out of you." And that he will, judging by the screams from the audience, and the new types of aliens that reportedly appeared. Spoiler warning, of course.

If the original creatures from Alien are known as "chestbursters" and "facehuggers," then these new folks are being called "mouthbursters" and "backbursters." This lines up with some shots we saw in the movie's trailers, which featured a shirtless man convulsing while something seemingly prepared a bloody departure from his back (one guess as to which alien that was). This also confirms similar rumors spreading around last year, which also claimed a new type of xenomorph would form after using Michael Fassbender's android as a host.

The mouthbursters sound worst of all though, if that wasn't immediately obvious from whatever image the name conjured up for you. According to Variety, they were the most prolific aliens in the screened footage, shooting out from their human hosts in "fountains of blood." None of these are immediately visible in the trailer, but it's likely that they'll turn into the full grown xenomorphs the Covenant trailer gave us a clear look at.

At a different SXSW panel, Scott also addressed a prominent rumor going around that Katherine Waterston's heroine "Daniels" would be related to Sigourney Weaver's original heroine Ellen Ripley in some way, since the two seem like similar characters based on what's been screened. Answering the question at a roundtable, Scott said:
Opening quote
"No. That was probably way back when. 'Should she be the daughter of Ripley?' I said 'no.' She's herself."
Closing quote

While "she's herself" is probably enough to signify that Waterston's character is wholly original, there's one problem: the rumor wasn't that Daniels would be Ripley's daughter. Alien: Covenant is a prequel, which means the question is whether or not she'd be Ripley's mother. Whether Scott simply misspoke or was intentionally misdirecting (both very possible) remains to be seen.

Alien: Covenant comes out May 19, 2017.
