While they're sometimes well hidden, Game of Thrones is no stranger to guest stars, particularly musical guest stars. Metal band Mastodon played wildlings in Hardhome, Sigur Rós played fantasy versions of themselves in Joffrey's court, and now lovable redhead Ed Sheeran will be appearing in some way next season.

The announcement came from a Game of Thrones panel at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, comprised of showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss along with Maisie Williams (who plays Arya) and Sophie Turner (Sansa). Getting Sheeran onto the show was something Benioff and Weiss had apparently been pursuing for a long time before finally securing him, mostly because he had fans among the cast: Williams in particular is a big fan.

It's not yet confirmed who Sheeran will play, only that he'll appear when season 7 kicks off in July. Benioff said of their efforts:
Opening quote
"For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it."
Closing quote

Sheeran just released a new album this month, Divide, so he'll probably be touring by the time he gets killed off on the show (maybe he'll become one of Arya's victims, so he'll get a scene with Williams). Among other guest stars this season will be Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge, Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter) as a maester in the Citadel.

Turner jokingly ended the topic by saying she's "still waiting on Bieber" to guest star, to which Weiss responded "You're waiting on Biebs? Season 9." There will only be eight seasons.

Game of Thrones season 7 premieres July 16, 2017.
