Gods aren't so different from you and I: they try out new haircuts, suffer through break-ups, and they even get burned occasionally. And for all his rippling muscles and flowing golden locks, even Thor (aka Chris Hemsworth) worries about job security: in a recent interview, Hemsworth admitted that when he found out Thor would not be appearing in Captain America: Civil War, he was worried his time in the role was up. Here's how he described it:

Opening quote
"I was like, 'What? Are we being fired?' Marvel quickly reassured us, 'No you guys have got your own journey going on, and in order for that to work you can't be a part of this one.' Look, it turned out just perfect because we got to do a whole different kind of thing we wouldn't have [been] able to do otherwise."
Closing quote

Marvel, of course, would be crazy to fire Hemsworth, especially since his solo Thor adventures have done so well at the box office. Still, like any actor, when you see just about every other co-star from previous films being re-upped for another adventure, the mind tends to wander to some darker places.

It sounds like not only will Thor: Ragnarok have a much-relieved leading man, it will also include a tone shift to a slightly more comedic angle, thanks to new director Taika Waititi. As Hemsworth puts it to Entertainment Weekly:

Opening quote
"Taika has such a quirky, left-of-field sense of humor, which forced all the characters and the tone of the whole story to head in a new direction..Each day we were like, 'Are we pushing it too far? Are we allowed to have this much fun?"
Closing quote

For a taste of what's (maybe) to come, check out this great little short that Waititi and Thor recently cooked up:

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3rd, 2017. Hopefully it does well, so that Hemsworth doesn't have to fear for his job again.
