'Green Lantern Corps' Might Be Directed by David S. Goyer

While the 2011 Green Lantern film was a disaster not even Ryan Reynolds could save, the character has churned out tons of great comic stories over the years ("Sinestro Corps War," "Blackest Night"). And Warner Bros. thinks enough time has passed to give the green space cops another go, saying the next film will be a sci-fi buddy cop movie like "Lethal Weapon in space."

DC and Warner Bros. have already announced longtime DC writer David S. Goyer will be writing the 2020 film Green Lantern Corps with Justin Rhodes, but insiders are reporting that Goyer may now be directing the film on top of that. Jeff Sneider of Hollywood insider site Tracking-Board definitely thinks so, on an episode of Meet the Movie Press:

Opening quote
"I'm hearing David Goyer could very well wind up directing Green Lantern Corps himself. When you look at screenwriters that are taking the plunge and directing these movies themselves, we saw rumors last month that Simon Kinberg was going to direct the next X-Men movie. David Goyer is responsible for this entire DC Universe, he wrote Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He wrote Man of Steel, he is the architect, if you will."
Closing quote

If the reports are true, this is a mixed bag for Green Lantern Corps. While Goyer did indeed write Batman Begins and contribute to The Dark Knight, he's also written many of DCEU's less well-received films like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. Goyer's directed a handful of films before, but the only superhero film he ever directed was Blade: Trinity, usually the least beloved of the Blade series. He's known to bring the dark/gritty elements that have grown controversial lately to his superhero fare, so that could potentially mean a gritty Green Lantern Corps.

But just like Man of Steel's major criticism was that Superman shouldn't be given the "gritty superhero" treatment that Batman often gets, Green Lantern is in the same boat as a more upbeat superhero. In fact, it'd be really tough for a Green Lantern movie to be dark, because a Green Lantern's superpowers are literally based on light, so it'll be something to see what Goyer brings to the table. Still, fans of recent DC films should be happy with the news, because it sounds like more of the same.

Even with the writers and possibly now the director attached, we know little about what Green Lantern Corps will be about. We know that, unlike the 2011 movie, this one will star the two most popular Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart (only Jordan appeared in 2011). And since the Green Lanterns are essentially super-powered police officers out in space, it'll be a buddy cop movie this time around, hence the "Lethal Weapon in space" description.

Green Lantern Corps is currently scheduled to come out July 24, 2020. But like with Aquaman and The Batman, delays are very much possible.
