There Are Still More 'Ghostbusters' Movies Being Planned
Sony
Last year's Ghostbusters reboot wasn't the moneymaking blockbuster Sony hoped to start a franchise with. While the film ended up being much better than what some of the online vitriol aimed at it would suggest, its total of just over $200,000 failed to make much of a dent at the box office.

Which is why it's surprising to hear that Sony may be resurrecting Ghostbusters once again - no pun intended - for yet another reboot. Ivan Reitman, the director behind the first two Ghostbusters films and a producer on the 2016 movie, claims that work is being done on a new animated Ghostbusters movie to be released in either 2019 or 2020 - along with new live action movies.

Speaking to io9, Reitman said that they "would've loved to have a larger hit" with their latest film, a euphemism for "did not make money." But he actually has bigger plans than just a reboot. He sees an entire cinematic universe, despite the film falling through:
Opening quote
"We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films. I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that."

While we'd still love to see a Ghostbusters movie universe take off, the fact that the reboot lost money suggests it's not going to happen that easily. Plus, we pretty much know Sony was largely uninterested in allowing Reitman to be involved with the reboot, thanks to the Sony email hack. So should we really be taking him too seriously when he gives his predictions on what's going on with Ghostbusters? The reboot largely cut him out of the creative process, so it seems unlikely that he has the final say in the process.

Still, the Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring game seems like a solid use for virtual reality. And the new movies could be good, if done right: if Reitman pitched an animated film based on the '80s cartoon The Real Ghostbusters, then they would have to say yes, because that show was awesome.
