'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Trailer Shows Off Peter Parker's Angsty Teenage Side
Marvel/Sony
No matter your feelings about previous Spider-Man movies, it's hard to argue that either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield looked particularly young when playing the iconic lead role in their respective movies. It's hard to suspend your disbelief and pretend that a character is a teenager when you can almost see his five o'clock shadow during closeups.

Luckily, new actor Tom Holland seems much more like an actual teen (and he's over ten years younger than Garfield). With Spider-Man: HomecomingMarvel Studios and co-producer Sony are giving the web head's classic coming of age story another spin, and if this new trailer is any indication, growing pains are front and center throughout the entire plot. As well as Michael Keaton's high-flying Vulture.

Everything here reeks of teenage angst and a desire to grow up, to the point that you can almost smell the Axe body spray. This is a Peter Parker who wants to prove himself, join the Avengers, and become a hero - no matter how unprepared he might be to actually stop bad guys. And his amateur status is especially noticeable with all the focus on Iron Man and the Avengers.

It's an interesting new twist for a character who, until now, has always seemed incredibly capable in his big screen appearances. With any luck, letting Homecoming focus on Peter's teenage struggles and his desire for a father figure in Tony Stark could help the movie stand out from the pack - after all, as this is the sixth solo Spider-Man film, it definitely needs to take a novel approach in order to avoid falling into series tropes and cliches.

And it makes sense now why Marvel was so eager to cast a Peter Parker who works well with Robert Downey Jr, since we've already seen the two pal around. At a time when the studio may need a new hero to fill Iron Man's boots once contracts expire and the universe gets reshuffled, there's a good chance that Tom Holland could end up being the future face of the MCU.

Spider-Man: Homecoming comes out July 7, 2017.
