‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ Trailer is Colorful, Crazy Space Action

With a famous science fiction filmmaker behind it and a name evoking old pulp sci-fi, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has been a while in the making. Penned and directed by Luc Besson, whose credits include The Fifth Element, as well as Lucy and Léon: The Professional, the film looks a crazy return to Besson's Fifth Element style of space operas.

The story is set in the 28th century and follows two human Black Ops agents, Valerian (Dane Dehaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), as they seek out a dark force that threatens the future of "Alpha," a diverse and enormous metropolis home to a variety of species from one thousand planets. And of course, they only have ten hours to do it.

The trailer features monsters, aliens, spaceships, combat, and a glimpse into the paradise that is Alpha. It appears the film will have elements of Guardians of the Galaxy more in plot than tone and feature a romantic subplot between the leads. We hope the film can stand on its own in the realm of galactic action adventures, but just the fact that this isn't a franchise (yet) breathes some freshness into it.

The upcoming movie is an adaptation of the French comics, Valérian and Laureline, published in 1967 by writer Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mézières. Besides starring Dehaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Delevingne (Suicide Squad), the cast also includes the likes of Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, and Rihanna, who appears for a brief moment here.

It is not surprising that Luc Besson originally scrapped the first draft of the film after seeing James Cameron's Avatar. The Valerian trailer showcases incredible visual effects that were no doubt influenced by the cinematography of Avatar

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters July 21, 2017.
