'American Gods' Title Sequence is Full of Neon Lights and Trippy Visuals
Starz
American Gods was originally a fantastic and very bizarre novel by Neil Gaiman, and it's easy to be optimistic over how fantastic and very bizarre the upcoming show seems to be, based on the crazy trailers we've seen so far. And the show's opening theme, which was just revealed by Starz, seems to be fitting into that same mold.

It's filled with neon lights and figurines that are full of symbolism regarding the show's story, blending old-world mythology (the Norse world tree, Greek centaurs) and religious motifs (a menorah and crucifix both appear) with tons of modern technology, like the astronaut hanging from said crucifix and said menorah turning into a set of outlets. The show will follow main characters Shadow (Ricky Whittle) and Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) as they gather forgotten Old Gods living across the United States to help fight the modern New Gods, so the ancient-vs-tech theme works well here.

You can see the full opening credits here:
And the whole sequence was made by TV opening veterans - it's the latest project from production studio Elastic, the brains been behind similar opening credits for Game of Thrones, Westworld, Daredevil, and True Detective. They seem have a thing for moody 3D models that the camera slowly pans around, but hey, it works. As for why they took their latest work in this neon lit direction, American Gods showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green gave the following explanation for what you just saw:

Opening quote
"Is it strange to want action figures from a main title sequence? Crucified astronauts, neon cowboys and S&M centaurs, we bow to Elastic and their spectacular vision. A totem of godly visions we didn't know we needed to worship until they showed us the light with this clarion call to the 'American Gods.'"
Closing quote

While strange to be sure, once you get past the "S&M centaurs," the whole thing is really impressive to watch (or maybe you found it impressive because of things like the S&M centaur). Either way, prepare to see it play out once again when the show begins this April.

American Gods will premiere April 20, 2017 on Starz.
